President’s Message

By David Rotenstein

Summer’s over and it’s back to school, work, and the annual NFCCA meeting cycle.  I have enjoyed getting to know more of you in the past two years I’ve served on the NFCCA board than I did in all the years living here previously.  Thank you for letting me serve our neighborhood.

But now it’s time for me to step aside.  At the next NFCCA meeting, you will be selecting a new president and new members to serve on the board of directors.  Unlike past presidents who linger on for a year after leaving office, I will not be serving the board in the past president capacity.  That will open up another slot on the board and give more folks a chance to get involved in the neighborhood.  We have a terrific pool of volunteers, from the folks who produce and deliver this newsletter every couple of months to the officers and board members who coordinate events and look out for our community when public decisions are made that could impact our quality of life.

In addition to the NFCCA elections, our October meeting will feature Silver Spring’s postmaster, Gabriel Hamilton.  Earlier this year I wrote in this newsletter about mail delivery issues:  missing mail, misdelivered mail, etc.  Despite many conversations with U.S. Postal Service carrier managers who are responsible for our neighborhood, the issues were only temporarily abated.

Over the summer I contacted U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin’s office and his staff was able to bring our issues directly to the attention of our postmaster.  Please come to the October meeting if you would like to share your mail delivery stories or if you have questions about mail delivery in our neighborhood or about the closure of Silver Spring’s main post office.

Another item on the October meeting agenda is the revision of the NFCCA bylaws.  They’ve gotten kind of stale since the last time they were updated sometime around 1996.  Electronic copies of a redline document showing proposed revisions have been shared via the listserv and there’s a summary of changes elsewhere in this issue [see article].

I look forward to seeing you at the October meeting.   ■
