20th Annual Spring Creek Cleanup

By Carole Barth

After rescheduling to our rain date (Saturday, 1 May), we had great weather for the spring creek cleanup.  About a dozen people showed up during the morning to help out.  Water levels were low, and there was not much trash.  The only large items were tires, which pre-cleanup volunteers had already pulled out of the creek.  Therefore, several people concentrated on attacking invasive plants (see article).

Indeed, it was very tough for Brian Morrissey and me to make our way down the stream channel, since the heavy snows had bent the multiflora bushes right down into the water.  There were sections we literally had to cut our way through.

These work days do make a difference, however.  The portion of the stream around the last culvert on Lockridge Drive is greatly improved.  It used to be that you couldn’t even see the trees for all the porcelain berry.  After the crew’s hard work at last year’s cleanup, however, the trees are largely clear.

Thanks to Brian Morrissey for organizing the cleanup and consolidating all the trash at the end of the day.   ■
