Stories from the NFCCA Newsletter, the “Northwood News” |
The NFCCA Board would like to gauge the interest of the neighborhood in seeking additional traffic calming measures.
One such calming measure might be a “traffic circle” at the intersection of Dennis Avenue and Marvin and Edgewood Roads. (As a designated “arterial” road, Dennis Avenue is not eligible for other traffic calming measures, such as speed humps, under current County guidelines.)
Other possible strategies include seeking speed humps for those roads that are eligible. The County typically gives priority to those streets that have experienced increased traffic due to the presence of speed humps on parallel streets. Streets such as Northwood and Woodridge Avenues, which parallel SouthÂwood and Lorain Avenues, would likely have the greatest possible success in obtaining speed humps.
Other streets that experience a moderate to high volume of traffic (1,000-plus cars a day) would also be eligible for traffic calming measures, based on County guidelines.
In recent years, traffic calming measures, particularly speed humps, have been difficult to obtain. Neighborhoods are required to submit written applications through their local Civic Association. The County then follows up with traffic surveys and other evaluations. If a traffic calming measure is granted, a high percentage of affected residents must sign Concurrence Forms.
Due to the need for neighborhood involvement and concurrence, the Board would like to know if people are interested in seeking traffic calming measures and if there are volunteers who are willing to help coordinate the effort for their particular street. Please call Margaret Hawkins, Acting NFCCA Treasurer, about this issue [contact details redacted].
