October Creek Cleanup Reveals ‘Sports’ Theme

By Carole Barth

There was much less trash than usual recovered in this fall’s cleanup of Lockridge Creek (which splits Lockridge Drive at the north end of Dennis Avenue).  This was most likely the result of the severe summer drought.  With less rain, less trash-laden stormwater flows into the creek.  There was still plenty of work to be done, however.  The low water levels made it possible to remove some stubborn items embedded in the stream bed.  It felt good to finally see the old “No Dumping” sign rooted out of the mud; we’ ve been trying to remove that ironic bit of trash for several years running.

This year’s haul of unusual items had a decidedly sporting theme.  We removed two bikes, a football, a basketball, a tennis ball, and a fishing rod.  The most unusual item found was a Victoria’s Secret gift card.  Thanks to everyone who participated and thanks again to Brian Morissey for the use of his van.

If you missed out on the fun, don’t worry; just plan on coming to the spring cleanup/Earth Day celebration next April.  If you would like to help with the spring cleanup, call [contact number redacted].  We need volunteers to help with publicity, setup/take down, supplies, refreshments, and photos.   ■
