New to the Neighborhood?
If so, we welcome you to Northwood-Four Corners-Forest Knolls! This is a great
neighborhood with many great benefits and loads of nice people. Some of these benefits are:
- a tremendously active civic association, which successfully fought a drive-through
Kentucky Fried Chicken/Taco Bell franchise at Woodmoor Center and influenced the location of a
Trader Joe’s store at the new Burnt Mills Shopping Center;
- new listservs, one for parents and one a crime watch (see stories);
- our fabulous wooded trail, the Rachel Carson Greenway (access at the north end of
Lockridge Drive);
- the North-Four Corners Park (at Edgewood and Southwood Avenues), which will soon be expanded
out to University Blvd. (see story);
- environmental activism (biannual clean-ups of the Lockridge Drive creek — see page four — and recycling 50+ percent of our trash);
- political activism (more than 73 percent of registered voters in our precinct voted in the 2004 election);
- the nearby Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center (1000 Forest Glen Rd.);
- a network of parents with preschoolers (see story);
- an outdoor public pool with a three-meter high dive;
- Forest Knolls Elementary School (on Eastwood Avenue off Caddington), with its
Communication Arts focus and total inclusion program for the physically challenged, is
undergoing expansion to decrease class size;
- newly reopened Northwood High School; and
- our ethnically diverse population. ■
