Neighbors Turn Out for Total Solar Eclipse 8 April

A total solar eclipse transversed a large swatch of the United States on 8 April 2024.  Our area had slighly less than a total eclipse, about 87 percent.  In our area it started at 2:04 p.m., peaked at 3:20 p.m., and ended at 4:32 p.m.  Here are a few neighbors who caught it — and were caught in turn!

Barbara Hays, Dennis Avenue, had spare viewing glasses and invited anyone looking for a good spot to join her for the viewing.  She even set up chairs!  (Photo by Marty Bokow.)

Dan Gruner, Lombardy Road, decided his rooftop would be the perfect viewing venue.  (Photo by Kristie Trousdale, who must have joined him!)

Jeni and Deren Blessman, Malta Lane, relaxed in their yard to watch the event.

Fiona Morrissey, Edgewood Avenue, managed to get this “stellar” photo of the eclipse with no special equipment, just her phone.

Jacquie and Marty Bokow, Cavalier Drive, stood in the apron of their driveway, the only spot in their yard where the sun wasn’t hidden by branches.  “Thanks to Becky Prochilo of Southwood Avenue and Karen Williams of Snowy Owl Drive for the glasses,” they say, or they couldn’t have seen it!  They got their neighbor David Oberholtzer to snap their photo, and also shared the glasses for a few minutes with five men working in the yard next door and the postal carrier!

Father and daughter take in the eclipse together.  Kevin Kirshenbaum of Loxford Terrace snapped this selfie with daughter Evie Kirshenbaum-Bender in their backyard.

“Faux-Wiccan” Judy Vann, Marvin Lane, awaits the eclipse.  “Almost, almost....”

“This looks like a selfie of the eclipse seared onto my eyeball, but that’s the eclipse through the clouds, branches, and solar sunglasses,” says Lawrence Muljo of Edgewood Avenue.

Mark Doeler of Chiswell Lane was photographed by Julie Whitcomb.

Linda Perlman, Caddington Avenue, took a selfie with eclipse glasses donated by a generous neighbor who had an extra pair.  “The NFCCA neighborhood listserv is a great resource,” she said.
