Northwood HS Wins Fall Sportsmanship Awards

At a February meeting for athletic directors and system-wide athletics, six of Northwood High School’s fall sports teams were awarded Montgomery County Public Schools’ (MCPS) Sportsmanship Awards.

The award-winning teams included:  Girls Tennis, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Team Handball, Field Hockey, and Football.

The MCPS Sportsmanship award has been in place since 2002.  The awards are determined by evaluations submitted by game officials and administrative representatives of both teams for each sporting event.  Top ratings of player, spectator, and coach conduct and overall administration of the varsity sporting contest all determine award winners.

“I feel like we, as a school, are good about leaving it on the field and not holding a grudge,” said NHS Athletic Director Marco Fuggetti.  “It’s a nice spin on it to have outsiders noticing and complimenting us.  The attitude and commitment are there from our athletes and this award shows what comes first at Northwood.”

The county high school that wins the most team sportsmanship awards in a school year is named Sportsmanship Champion and receives a monetary award; the top-rated school wins $2,000.  NHS has not yet won that award.   ■
