Second Oldest Home in Neighborhood is For Sale

By Jacquie Bokow

A home for sale on Dennis Avenue is the second oldest house in the neighborhood.  Only the Kinsman Farm homestead, built in the 1780s, is older (see the June 2008 issue of the Northwood News for details on the Kinsman home).  Built in 1890, the Dennis Avenue house is the oldest remaining home in the old Read family farmstead, out of which all of the Northwood Park and subsequent subdivisions were carved (a story on that in a future issue).

The asking price for the six-bedroom colonial — and all three plots — is $899,900.  The original home was built in 1890.

Although the number on the house reads “503,” the home is listed by realtors — because of the property’s tax records — as “507 Dennis Avenue.”  If you pass the house, on the first court north of University Boulevard, you’ll see signs posted showing that a “Development Application for Northwood Knolls” as been applied for to the County, which would allow up to five new houses to be built.

The current property covers lots 15, 16, and 17.  The plot map below shows the large size of plot 15, which could easily be subdivided into three normal-sized lots, although all the existing buildings — main house, storage sheds, detached office, greenhouses, gazebo, etc. — would need to be demolished.  The property is owned by the Clements family, which owns a local landscaping business.

The Clements property encompasses plots 15, 16, and 17 on Dennis Avenue.  Plot 15 is the size of three average plots and could be split into three properties (allowing five new homes to be built), but only if the home now standing is torn down.

The colonial boasts six bedrooms and four full bathrooms.  The asking price for the house and all three plots is $899,900.
