Northwood/Four Corners/Forest Knolls residents will again come together to celebrate a cherished neighborhood amenity, the Rachel Carson Meadow in the North Four Corners Park. Community members have named the park’s six-acre meadow area after the famous local scientist and author, Rachel Carson. This was in honor of her last book called “The Sense of Wonder,” which encouraged adults to instill in children an appreciation for the beauty and magic to be found in natural areas.
The Washington Revels (www.revelsdc.org) will perform their Spring Festival program as part of this event again this year. Earlier in the day, attendees are invited to learn songs and dances or to help with making props. Later in the afternoon, the Revels performers and community members will come together to present the Spring Festival celebration, including a Maypole dance.
Dog owners are welcome to enter their pets into the “Pitting of the Pooches.” This is a very popular and fun competition that features prizes for best kisser, most resemble their owner, and best trick. There will be other activities for kids, local environmental and community groups will have booths, and sports demonstrations will be offered.
Check the civic association website (which you’re now on) for more details and schedule information. Volunteers are needed to help with activities as well as setup and cleanup. If you have an activity or are willing to volunteer, please call or email [contact details redacted]. County Parks Department regulations prohibit any sales on its grounds. ■
