Slogging through mud in the 1950s when their neighborhood had just been carved out of the woods of Maggie Reed’s farm. Standing on license plates and roller skating down Cavalier Drive. Crawling through sewer pipes. Playing touch football and wiffleball in Cavalier Court. Sharing community-owned drill, ladder, lawnÂmower, and floor polisher. Fathers babysitting other kids as part of the “Sitters Club.” Former neighbors shared these and many other vivid memories at a 50th anniversary reunion and party held May 30 in the all-purpose room at Forest Knolls Elementary School. The event celebrated the unique history of the 44 brick ramblers on Cavalier Drive and Belton Road, which were built by a member-run cooperative. About 120 current and former neighbors attended the party, with some guests coming from as far away as Arizona, California, Washington State, Florida, Massachusetts and London, England. The photos — by Dennis Hodgson, son-in-law of the Gershensons (see original owner Leo Gershenson in red shirt) — tell it all!
